Event Bayport Ghetto, Francistown

Botswana`s music superstar, Odirile Vee Sento will headline the first ever cavalcade dubbed Bayport Ghetto Carnival to be held in Francistown starting on Thursday. Vee Mampeezy will perform during the pre-carnival party and on the day of the carnival to be staged along Blue Jacket Street on the second day of the cavalcade. This is the first carnival to be hosted in Francistown. And the organisers of the carnival have vowed to make this unique event an annual one with a view of breathing some life into the countrys second largest city. Indeed, I will be in the Ghetto doing what I know best on the stage, said the Taku-Taku hit maker. He promised a performance out of this world. First cut is always the deepest. And I would want go into the history books where people will talk about my performance at the very first carnival to be hosted in this diamond rich nation, he proclaimed. The pint-sized house-kwasa maestro will be performing with his full band. He said it is time for him to reunite with his ever hyperactive fans in Francistown and the better northern part of Botswana. Father Maphongo, the Bayport Financial Services Executive Chairman and premium sponsor of the carnival, said they are aware that the concept of carnival is new in Botswana. However, he was quick to point out that carnivals are not new to the world. Maphongo gave well known examples such as Rio Carnival in Brazil, Carnivale in Venice, Italy and the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, USA which he described as great enjoyment and excitement to the attendees. (But) the Bayport Ghetto Carnival is not an attempt to replicate Rio, Venice or New Orleans, explained Maphongo. Instead it is going to be a uniquely Botswana event that celebrates our rich culture as we have fun with our past while looking forward to the future, he said. There is no doubt that this grand old city of Francistown will be pulsating with rhythm and excitement making it a perfect place for a carnival, said Maphongo. Ngqabutho Khumalo, one of the event organisers, expressed confidence that the carnival will embrace and exhibit the diverse cultures in the Francistown community and the country at large. This event will serve as a unifying force behind our Francistown community through cultural and creative expression, he said.
